Dewars Double Double Aged 27 Years Old

Innovation comes in many forms, and in 2019 our Master Blender, Stephanie Macleod, released a new range of Blended Scotch Whiskies with a Four Stage Ageing Process for Ultimate Smoothness. This may sound like an indulgence, but the series has been picking up gold medal awards the world over since being released. To do things right and get the best results you should put in double the effort; everything else is just a job half done. So, if you ask how we could put in double the effort to the range that was already Double Aged for Extra Smoothness, and it was obvious… double it!

The Double Double Series has been aged, blended, aged again, then finished in sherry casks for the Ultimate Smoothness. The unique Four Stage Ageing Process for Ultimate Smoothness finished in Palo Cortado Sherry Casks (which is virtually unheard of). The first step involves single malts and single grains which have been aged separately at least 27 years. Next, the single malts are blended and rested in exhausted casks. This process is also done for the single grains. Then, the blended single malts and blended single grains are blended and again rested in exhausted casks. Finally, the blended scotch finishes its maturation in sherry casks. For the 27 year, it is finished in ex-Palo Cortado sherry, a wildly different whisky.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: It is heavy with notes of nougat and almonds, then a distinct dry sherry note — slightly salty, slightly sour, slightly mushroom.

Palate: It has less overt sherry character than I was expecting, though leather and mushroom are dominant, along with some nutty chocolate bar notes.

Finish: silky-smooth
