Grapes for this Malbec are grown in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, then chilled and transported by ocean voyage to Caymus, where we use our winemaking techniques to create a style that is dense, dark and supple. Falling outside standard labeling rules, Red Schooner does not include a vintage date but is known by the voyage from which it traveled. Strikingly smooth, with scents and flavors of dark fruit and fine, textural tannins.
Beautiful Argentina is legendary in the production of fine Malbec wine. Inspried to create Red Schooner, Caymus Vineyards designed an efficient method to ship grapes over ocean waters while retaining their precious qualities. The plan was to pinpoint a high-caliber vineyard on the slopes of the Andes Mountains, then harvest and chill the fruit, transporting the valuable cargo by sea voyage to Caymus Vineyards. The fruit arrived in excellent condition, looking as though it had just been harvested. They used great care to extract deep color and rich tannins through a slow and delicate fermentation.
Tasting Notes:
A dense, dark red, this wine opens up with the scent of ripe plums and cherries, layered with hints of unsweetened baking chocolate. On the palate, it is powerful, concentrated, supple and persistent, with generous flavors of French oak that support but don't dominate. The wine carries through to a complete finish, balanced and integrated with soft tannins that imbue it with both structure and balance.
